Má Estrela (which released its debut album at the start of the year) is the new working band for Pedro Alves Sousa, a saxophone player and one of the leading names in this new century’s Portuguese jazz music, who surrounds himself with musicians outside jazz as we understand it, companions of many other endeavors, to present a creation made up of hybrids and sonic heterogeneity. Má Estrela begins and directs a dialogue between silence and an understanding of a specific genre, in this case dub, which, under Sousa’s direction, is made up of various lineages of contemporary electronics: either the ones upon which today’s post-soul songs stand, or be them footwork and other dance music genres, or even the lethargic and hypnotic incursions into ambient music. The end result is one of blissful suspension, or a return to the ground of the voltages searching for wings to levitate with.
