One of our long-standing ambitions has been to create a space dedicated to recorded music as a listening experience in its own right. This is a first step in that direction: a place where music is approached with the same attention and openness we usually reserve for the concert hall, but where proximity, informality and shared time allow for other forms of collective listening to emerge.

To inaugurate this new space, we have invited Guy-Marc Hinant, founder of the seminal Belgian label Sub Rosa, whose catalogue has spent more than four decades mapping some of the most adventurous territories of experimental music, sound art and electroacoustic practice.

Across two listening sessions, “Anthologies of Noise and Electronic Music” and “The Early Electronic Music Series and Global Electronic & Electroacoustic Experiments”, Hinant will guide us through a personal selection of recordings drawn exclusively from the Sub Rosa catalogue, with a particular focus on lesser-known pioneers from the West and the Global South, tracing unexpected connections, forgotten histories and radical approaches to Listening that continue to resonate today.

Em fevereiro de 2025, na pequena cidade de Socorro, Brasil, enquanto os últimos rolos de linha se desenrolavam, as agulhas de uma fábrica de tricot teciam o seu próprio réquiem. A peça sonora de bujiwa (alter ego de Wladimir Vaz Mourão, artista e editor que faz do Barreiro a sua casa há uns bons anos) é o registo artístico dessa despedida, uma cerimónia de adeus a um som que não voltará a ouvir-se. Apresentada, apropriadamente, na oficina de reparação automóvel Ruiforauto, esta peça em estreia absoluta parte de gravações feitas na fábrica: motores, engrenagens e agulhas das máquinas de tricot, a que se juntam a voz de Sofia Nunes, o baixo elétrico e a máquina de costura operada por Marta Nunes - novas tecnologias, velhos problemas, ou velhas tecnologias, novos problemas. O mundo continua a ser um emaranhado por desenredar.

In February 2025, in the small Brazilian town of Socorro, as the last spools of yarn unravelled, the needles of a knitting factory wove their own requiem. bujiwa's (the alter ego of Wladimir Vaz Mourão, artist and editor who has called Barreiro home for some years now) sound piece is the artistic record of that farewell, a ceremony bidding goodbye to a sound that will never be heard again. Presented, fittingly, at the Ruiforauto car repair workshop, this world premiere draws on recordings made inside the factory: motors, gears and knitting machine needles, joined by the voice of Sofia Nunes, electric bass and a sewing machine operated by Marta Nunes. New technologies, old problems, or old technologies, new problems. The world remains a tangle waiting to be unravelled.

A messenger from the front line of Indonesia’s fertile cultural underground, the duo formed in 2010 by Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi returns to Portugal with their overwhelming, fusion-driven ceremony, where the invocation of traditional Javanese music collides with electrified psychedelia, noise, and the attitude of esoteric metal. In an encounter where Shabara’s multidimensional vocal expressivity is projected onto Suryadi’s invented and amplified instruments — shaped by years on stage and an already substantial body of work — their practice continues to provoke astonishment, unfolding live as a fluid experience of intensity, camaraderie, headbanging, and trance.

Referring less to agriculture itself than to the gestures of care, repetition, attentiveness and acceptance that cultivation entails, _farming, the project of Adriana João and moss kissing, both members of the long-form music collective ZACHARIAS and part of a close-knit artistic community spanning electroacoustic music and song, finds in repetition a fertile ground for transformation. Through a flowing interplay of languid guitar chords, harmonic gestures and subtle inflections on the violin, richly textured electronic processing and a voice that rises above and haunts this entire hypnotic spectrum of frequencies, the duo gradually unfolds a world of its own.

Demdike Stare and Cherrystones come together in ‘Who Owns the Dark?’, bringing Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker's long-standing exploration of occult electronics, industrial atmospheres and club-derived mutations into dialogue with Cherrystones' accumulated knowledge of obscure recorded music, shaped through years of crate digging, generous radio broadcasting – as one of NTS's longest-serving residents – and exploratory DJ sets. Instigating encounters between histories and musical languages as unexpected as they are deeply meaningful, Demdike Stare and Cherrystones channel, in ‘Who Owns the Dark?’, an ever-shifting esoteric current flowing through the residues of industrial, noise, psychedelia and atmosphere. The result is an intuitive collage of weathered loops, voices processed beyond time and space, blankets of noise and fractured beats that align and scatter according to a hypnotic logic of mystery and speculation.
