A Portuguese musician with a past as guitar player for doomish post-rockers LÖBO, Luis Pestana slowly and quietly developed his solitary path until he appeared with a fully formed vision with ‘Rosa Pano’, released by the much esteemed Orange Milk label in 2020. Repressed on vinyl last year, ‘Rosa Pano’ occupies a beautiful slot within the Portuguese electronic music of recent years, melding both acoustic - vocals, horns, zither - and purely digital sources into a highly detailed and vaporous sound.
Not completely removed from Oneohtrix Point Never’s more baroque sensibilities or vaporwave’s dreamings, but without any of the retro-fetishist rhetoric of the “movement”, ‘Rosa Pano’ creates its own folklore, not as something stuck in time and space but as a perspective of both the present and potential futures.
