Hailing from Baltimore, US, Horse Lords are a quartet formed by Andrew Bernstein on saxophone, percussion and electronics, Max Eilbacher on bass and electronics, Owen Gardner on guitar and electronics and Sam Haberman on drums. With five albums spread through labels like NNA Tapes, Northern Spy or Rvng Intl., their music is born out of a constant rhythmic pulse, propelled by the steady flow of Can, Afrobeat’s communal call or the ecstasy of Miles Davis’ ‘Dark Magus’ to become its own entity, equal parts sprawling and succinct. Resorting to just intonation, Horse Lords erects a sound in constant mutation from repetitive guitar melodies, hypnotic basslines, electronic textures, polyrhythms and shards of saxophone that never settles into a particular geography or school, but keeps itself alive and dancing, both in the body and mind.
