bar italia

“bar italia is a London-based band” is the plain truth and all we can gather from the official bio of this mysterious troupe with records on Dean Blunt’s World Music. For all purposes and considering the haze surrounding them, Bar Italia could well be another one of Blunt’s creations, though a couple of gritty photos point to a trio of two boys and a girl. The voices we hear seem to confirm that but all this speculation is so in tune with the label’s blurred intent, that trying to find full meaning in all of this is rather pointless. Let’s leave it at that. Narcotic and lo-fi indie pop, very bedroom sounding and viewed through a slacker perspective of bloodshot eyes. A sequence of short tracks where dusty lysergic beats anchor guitar melodies inherited from the indie brit school - chorus and reverb, Inrains single and Felt - and disenchanted vocals with a natural trait to summon memorable hooks out of the mist. With all the charming carelessness of early Pavement or Sebadoh or Galaxie 500’s late summer vibes, but without any revisionist stance toward the 90s.
