An outsider amidst the anodyne scenery of ambient, claire rousay has no qualms in projecting her own personality and personal experience into her music. Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, rousay develops an almost diarist approach to composition, forging an image all her own against the blank faced contemplation of much pad based music. Granting access to her “audience's” most voyeuristic impulses as way for them to review themselves in such experiences. In a permanent liminal space between dream and reality, rousay allows both dimension to intrude against one another in longform compositions that feel labored but never overtly cerebral. Filled with emotion and self-references, her music zeroes in on the minutiae of everyday life – voice memos, field recordings, whispers, snippets of conversations, and so on – in order to give it new signifiers, enveloping them in a narrative with strings, piano or electronic textures that can be as droney as evocative of hyperpop – a softer focushas no shame in admitting it. Album titles like sometimes i feel like i have no friends or everything perfect is already here are evocative of that same honesty, in an oneiric cartography that is always uncannily revealing, strangely tactile in its intimacy.
