Emerging from an invitation extended by the Damas cultural hub in Lisbon in 2021, the duo of Joana Guerra and Yaw Tembe took hold of its own existence through a handful of public appearances, which crystallized this year with the release of “Orogénese” on Facada Records. A nearly impressionistic record, it takes its title’s reference to the geological process of mountain formation and rejuvenation as a guide for music that conjures tectonic shifts and the spirits set free from them, moving against the grain of today’s restless pace. Drawing on a vast palette of instrumentation - the breath of the trumpet, incantatory voices, evocative cello lines, various percussive textures, solemn touches of electronic resonance, keyboards, transverse flute, or field recordings - the eight pieces of Orogénese unfold in a slow, deliberate flow, as if rescuing from silence and memory an eternal present of sound. These are sonic projections of possible futures, full of lyricism and steeped in an aura of mystery.
