HHY & The Kampala Unit

(Portugal/Uganda)
With origins dating back to 2017, during a residency by Jonathan Saldanha (of HHY & The Macumbas) promoted by the influential Nyege Nyege in Kampala, this mutating unit has been crafting trance rituals for the future, rooted in ever-pressing notions of ancestry. Anchored by a core duo - Saldanha on electronics and activist Florence Nandawula on vocals and winds - around which a rotating cast of collaborators revolves, the music of HHY & The Kampala Unit invents a unique cosmology. It emerges from warped emanations of dub, techno, or gqom, threaded through traditional polyrhythms, cinematic sonic panoramas, ecstatic horns, and a sense of urgency that feels at once celebratory and tense - suspended between the weight of the past and the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
