A somewhat discreet yet confident presence with a solid place in the landscape of electronic music made in Portugal, Pedro Tavares, hailing from Setúbal, has steadily built a body of work, immune to the rush of hype or the fate of the workhorse. With albums released on Variz, Holuzam, and Glossy Mistakes, and additional work on Bandcamp, funcionário has glimpsed the "fourth world" of Jon Hassell in its purest essence, projecting from it his own world(s), alive and self-contained. Rich in detail and open to thoughtful, heartfelt contemplation, his music does not settle into ambient serenity nor into the cyber-organic fusion of certain strains of IDM, though it draws from both what matters most. Ultimately, it is music by and for attentive, sensitive listeners, rarely performed live, and presented at this year’s OUT.FEST at a moment of new revelation, marked by the recent release of “horizonte”, once again under the trusted Holuzam label.
