Nok Cultural Ensemble

Penicheiros

Dreamt by Edward Wakili-Hick from Sons of Kemet, Steam Down or Kokoroko and casting an impressive ensemble with such artists as Afrorack, Watusi87 or Angel Bat Dawid, this project draws from afro-futurist principles to create a continuum between different lines and periods of the African Diaspora. With percussion placed front and center, Nok Cultural Ensemble’s music brings together multiple rhythmic traditions, conjoining history and future on the same plane through the evocation of legacies from soca, apala or broken beat. Driven by free jazz’s freedom and dub techniques, this music traces its origins from the Caribbean to Nigeria or England, animating them towards the present.
