Liturgy

Causing equal parts admiration and derision in the metal world with their debut ‘Renihilation’ and her “transcendental black metal” manifesto, Haela Hunt-Hendrix lives up to such a statement of intent with a growing body of work which is, in itself, a means to transcendence. Through various line-ups and with six albums to date, Hunt-Hendrix has been taking her deeply personal vision of the genre to heights increasingly less definable but still aligned with the most freeing of what the genre has to offer. On the recent ‘93696’, Liturgy crystallizes a sound where blast beats and tremolo picking intertwine with skewed electronics, orchestral arrangements, choral passages and a blessed flow of ideas that never disperse in their apparent dissonance and unify themselves in as a whole. Elevated and, of course, transcendental. Photo: Jessica Hallock
