Gume

Formed over a year and a half ago in Lisbon, Gume is a quintet made up by Pedro Monteiro on the double bass, Guilherme Parreira on drums, Miguel Monteiro on the alto saxophone, Yaw Tembé on the trumpet and André David on the electric guitar. Their music is built around the notion of groove, drawing from the works of Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman or Steve Coleman in jazz, while also giving spoken word poetry an important status within their musical vocabulary in a manner reminiscent of The Last Poets’ proto-hip hop or Linton Kwesi Johnson’s dub poetry and technology.
