Be Jazz Cafe
Peter Brötzmann & Steve Noble
Sometimes delicate and swinging, others a full fronted free jazz combo, as manifested in last year’s ‘I Am Here Where Are You’ released on Trost Records, this amazing sax & drums duo will present themselves for the first time in Portugal at the OUT.FEST and Amplifest festivals. Noble is a remarkable drummer, with an interesting past in the post-punk generation (as part of Rip Rig and Panic) and a voracious appetite for african rhythms (he studied with nigerian master Elkan Ogunde), and also a regular figure in the british free jazz scene, namely in Derek Bailey’s Company Weeks in the late 80’s and other formations throughout the 90’s with such fundamental figures as Lol Coxhill or John Edwards. Peter Brotzmann is what can safely be called a living legend; this german dean (over 70 years old) and godfather of european free jazz, released the classic ‘Machine Gun’ in 1968, gathered historical bands such as the Globe Unity Orchestra or Last Exit, besides an impressive track record of of duos with drummers, from Hans Bennink to Hamid Drake. Which, some guarantee, is the best way to witness him, beyond all the extended combos he has been directing over the years.
